HANNAH’S MIXTAPE

CENSORED by Hannah Buller is a 5 Volume Mixtape with 25 total songs that represents how she identifies herself. The meaning behind CENSORED represents a women who finds it difficult to let her guard down, and often restricts herself from fully letting others see who she really is. On the other hand, she is also able to tear those walls down through her music. Throughout her life, she carries a censorship that can only be broken with trust and belonging.

The CENSORED cover displays a large rose in order to exemplify her rose tattoo as well as her single called, “Feelin’ Rosey.” The meaning behind the song exudes a mood of feeling rosey or in a “fog.” This women’s mindset sometimes encounters insecurities and she covers up those insecurities by being outgoing, friendly, and a little weird. This type of mentality leaves her to build walls around herself, which often leaves her feeling lonely and too much in her head. She has always been the kind of person that is understanding, non-judgemental, kind, and accepting. Every day she prides herself of having her independence, but hopes that one day she will discover someone who will help her recognize her own beauty.

CENSORED reflects numerous identities on a level of individual, relational, and collective interpretation. According to Dr. Nate Rodriguez’s lecture from the beginning of the semester on the topic of identity, a person’s individual identity relates to aspects of self-definition and the role of the individual in creating or discovering his/her own identity. Within the relational identity, identities cannot be established by individuals on their own, but rather, they need to be recognized by a social audience to be secure. Finally, a person’s collective identity focuses on people’s identification with the groups and social categories to which they belong. Throughout this mixtape, Hannah identifies as a caring friend, an independent women, a basketball player, a singer, a creative artist, a loving daughter and sister, an outsider, and many more things that she has yet to discover herself.
